Blast Off!

My grandson, Ethan, is 3 today!  He's my first grandchild, and very special to me.  And he's extraordinarily smart!  (I know, he's MY grandson, but he really is something!).
Ethan loves space.  His bedroom is decorated in planets, moons and stars (and he'll be hanging up the space shuttle kite I got him for his birthday).  He can tell you all about the planets.  So what better card to make than this:

I used the stamp set, "Blast Off", and made an "out of this world" birthday card.  It's an extra large card (5 1/2" x 6 1/2"), big enough to fit most of the elements from the stamp set.   The background is stamped with Gorgeous Grunge (to make a "Milky Way", and then the shooting stars are embossed with White Embossing Powder.  I also punched a few more from Whisper White card stock and stuck them on with Mini Glue Dots.

My moon is two layers of Daffodil Delight card stock, with holes punched in the top layer.  My little astronaut was stamped using Stampin' Right Markers in Midnight Muse, Melon Mambo and Daffodil Delight, and fussy-cut.  He's popped up with Dimensionals.  His flag is a toothpick with a strip of Designer Series Paper.

This little guy is blasting off in a special rocket ship, stamped in Versamark and embossed with Silver Embossing Powder.  There's even a "window" made from Window Sheets.  Also fussy cut, this was "popped" with Dimensionals, and then I added a row of Candy Dots for some colorful bling!

So what do you think?  Did I succeed in my quest for the perfect birthday card for Ethan?  Won't you leave me a comment and let me know?

All items used are currently available in the 2013-2014 Catalog which you can access in my on-line store.

A Special Anniversary

Yesterday was the 5th wedding anniversary of my son, Matt, and his wonderful bride, Sarah.  I mentioned in an earlier post that Matt is currently stationed in Texas with the Air National Guard, becoming an intelligence analyst.  He has been gone four months already, and won't be home until Christmas.  So for a combined birthday/anniversary gift, I sent my daughter-in-law to Texas for the weekend (and I volunteered to take care of my two grandsons, ages nearly three and nearly one!--and that's another story!).

So of course I made a special card for them.  I had nothing in mind as I began to create, but was extremely pleased with the end results.  It just kinda happened!

I started by stamping the blooms and stems from Field Flowers on Whisper White, using Old Olive ink for the stems and Daffodil Delight and Pumpkin Pie for the flowers.
Next I inked up En Francais with Versamark and stamped it over the flowers, embossing it with Clear Embossing Powder and my trust Heat Tool.  I finished by sponging the Old Olive, Daffodil Delight and Pumpkin Pie ink, along with Crumb Cake all over the front, and then spritzed it with Smooch Spritz.

Love was die cut from the beautiful Gold Foil paper, using the Expressions Thinlets die and the Big Shot.

This front panel was layered onto a piece of the Gold Foil, then on Old Olive and finally onto the card base of Early Espresso.

Since this was an unusual-size card, I created my own, custom envelope using the Envelope Punch tool, which is super for this task.

Flipping for Halloween!

Ready for another Halloween card?

This was one of four cards done in our October Card Club:
Using the uber-fun Thinlets Card Dies (this is the Label one), we created a flip card for Halloween.
Here's the inside; note the label (the outside says "Hi, Pumpkin" while the inside flips to "Trick or Treat".  Notice the extra panel?  Easy to do by cutting your card stock 5 1/2" (actually I cut it at 5-7/16" to fit through the framelit) x 8-1/2".  You can use your framelit as a template to place your designer series paper on the cardstock before cutting, so everything cuts together.  Then slip the right side of your card through the framelit (it should be on TOP of the edge) and send it through Big Shot.  In one step you have cut the label (which flips) and scored your card in three places; now just adhere DSP to the back panel (which becomes the front panel, right side) and you're done!  How fun!

If I can ever figure out how to mount a video camera (or my iPhone) above my desk, I'll film a video of this.  Anybody have any suggestions for mounting a camera over my desk?

Happy Birthday, Matt!

Today is my son's birthday.  A little bitter-sweet for me (great memories of the day he was born and all the cherished times growing up) as he is now stationed in San Angelo, Texas, studying with the Air Force to become an Intelligence Officer.  He's been there for 4 months already (he normally lives with his wife and two of my adorable grandsons) about 30 minutes away, so this has been a bit difficult.  I did get to see him at the end of July when I flew down to help my daughter-in-law drive the family back after spending the summer together.  But he won't be home until Christmas...I miss him!

So a special card:
Love this set!  "Map it out" is a photopolymer stamp set--it's CLEAR!  Completely CLEAR!  So you can see just where you are stamping.  See the little "X"s in California and Texas?  Easy-peasy to place in the right spot!  (I dressed them up with a rhinestone basic jewel that I colored with a black sharpie pen).

The base is Basic Black, with a Smoky Slate layer (stamped Off the Grid in Basic Grey and ran it through the Big Shot with the Stylish Stripes embossing folder).  Black Chevron ribbon is wrapped around the layer, and then the focal point is added with Dimensionals.  I cut it, using the Labels Collection Framelits in two sizes, and paper pierced the Bermuda Bay layer using the Festive Paper Piercing Pack.

My card is on it's way to Matt; I hope he has a Happy Birthday!

October Card Club Halloween Card

Following yesterday's post, I'm going to show you one of the cards we made at my October Card Club.  Making my little banner for my entry-way Welcome sign put me in the mood to create a Halloween card:
What part of Halloween am I missing?  I've got the candy corn, the Jack-o-Lanterns, the ghost and the bat...This one has it all!

A piece of Witches Brew Designer Series Paper was layered onto the Old Olive base.  I used the Perfect Pennants Bigz L die and the Big Shot to make the Candy Corn base, and layered it with a piece of Witches Brew, Brights Paper Stack (Daffodil Delight) and Whisper White (running it through the Big Shot with the Hounds Tooth embossing folder).  Pumpkins were punched using the Extra Large Oval and 1 3/8" circle punches (hint:  punch three of the shapes, sponge edges with Pumpkin Pie ink, and layer them to create the pumpkin).  The ghost was punched with the Owl Builder Punch, feet snipped off and flipped upside down.  And the bat was created with some nifty trimming from the Elegant Butterfly punch and run through the Big Shot with the Perfect Polka Dots embossing Folder.  A touch of Witches Brew Designer Washi Tape finishes off my card--it was a hit at Card Club!

Want to get in on the fun?  If  you are local to Davis, California, contact me and I'll add  you to my e-mail list of club dates.  Can't make it to Davis?  I'm happy to pack up a set of ready-to-go supplies and you can put them together yourself.  Cost is $15 for four cards and envelopes, including postage.

Welcome Halloween Decor

What?  It's October already?  I once heard that "Life is like a roll of toilet paper; the closer you are to the end, the faster it goes!".  Well it's scary to think about "the end", but life sure does seem to be speeding by right now!

But (comparing my life to a roll of toilet paper, and always being prepared with another roll in the bathroom) I am ready to face the Fall.

Last year, while participating in a Holiday Boutique Craft Fair, I wandered around the display booths and found a wonderful framed chalkboard with "Welcome" already written on it.  The frame was a bit "vintagy" ( and since my home is NOT "vintagy", a "bit" was all I wanted) and it really made my wallet sit up and take notice!  I had to have it...I mean, I REALLY HAD to have it!  As my friend Karen says, "I really NEED it!".  So...this lives year-round on my entry table, and I've taken to decorating it for the season.

And now, my latest creative "dress up" for my frame:
After holding my "Spooky Banner" class last week, I decided to make a mini banner.  This was such fun!  Using a needle, I threaded each element onto a piece of Linen Thread (#104199, $4.50) and strung it across the frame.  I used some retired Halloween Designer Series paper along with the current Witches Brew (#132185, $10.95), to make some small pennants and banners, adding googly eyes to a few.  The pumpkins were punched with the Extra Large Oval (#119859, $16.95) and 1 3/8" Circle (#119860, $15.95) punches after stamping faces from the retired Carved and Candlelit.  The ghost was punched from the Owl Builder punch (turn it over and snip off the feet) (#118074, $16.95), and eyes were enhanced using a White Gel Pen (#105021, $3.95).  A mini rosette and some ribbon finished it off...I couldn't be happier with it.

What do you think?  Please leave me a comment...I read every one!
